The International Day of the Girl Child is observed annually on October 11. A day selected by the United Nations to urge the global community to encourage gender equality impacts. This year, the UN emphasized on the gender digital divide that exists in diverse skills and jobs and a challenge that is rising due to the ongoing coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic.
The main focus of the day is on the rights, safety and education of girls and to make girls an active part of the progress of the world. As part of the celebration, this year’s theme is “Digital generation. Our generation,” which acknowledges the growing digital world and how a digital gap can also widen the gender gap.
History of International Day of Girl Child 2021
In 1995, at the World Conference on Women in Beijing, an initiative was taken to address the challenge faced by young women. The need for an event focused on young and vulnerable girls was identified and the initiative began as a non-government international plan of action. October 11 was declared as the International Day of the Girls Child and was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 19, 2011.

Young girls have the potential to make a change in the world and to ensure a safe, educated, and healthy lifestyle for them is the need of the hour. According to the United Nations, “An investment in realising the power of adolescent girls upholds their rights today and promises a more equitable and prosperous future, one in which half of humanity is an equal partner in solving the problems of climate change, political conflict, economic growth, disease prevention, and global sustainability.” The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development embodies a roadmap for progress that is sustainable and leaves no one behind. Each of the 17 goals is integral to achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment. International Day of the Girl Child is an attempt to talk about and eradicate the problems concerning adolescent girl children.
