Who is Miss Universe 2021?

After a year’s delay due to coronavirus pandemic, the Miss Universe 2021 pageant was held Sunday at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.  Mario Lopez and former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo, co-hosted the 69th Miss Universe competition. Women representing 74 countries participated in the competition for the title of Miss Universe 2021. In the pageant, Miss Mexico Andrea Meza was crowned Miss Universe. 26 year old Miss Universe 2021, Andrea Meza  holds a degree in software engineering and is an activist focused on women’s rights. Former Miss Universe contestants Cheslie Kryst, Paulina Vega and Demi-Leigh Tebow were competition analysts and commentators, and a panel of eight women determined the winner. Whereas, Miss India Adline Castelino Bags Fourth Place At Miss Universe 2021. Brazil, Mexico, Dominican Republic, and Peru were among top 5 contestants.

After representing India in the top five, Adline Castelino was asked a question about Covid situation. The question to her was “Should countries lockdown due to COVID-19 despite the strain on their economies, or should they open their borders and risk a potential increase in infection rates?” responding to which Adline said, “Good evening universe. Well, coming from India and witnessing what India is experiencing right now, I have realized something very important that nothing is more important than the health of your loved ones. And you have to draw a balance between economy and health. And that can only be done when the government works with the people hand in hand and produces something that will work with the economy. Thank you.” For her well-rounded response in the question-answer round she received praise and admiration.

In the pageant, Myanmar’s Miss Universe contestant, Thuzar Wint Lwin, used the opportunity to raise voice  against the military coup in her home country. “Our people are dying and being shot by the military every day, I would like to urge everyone to speak about Myanmar. As Miss Universe Myanmar since the coup, I have been speaking out as much as I can,” she said in a video message for the competition.

In the past, the pageant has also drawn some  criticism for objectifying the contestants. However, in recent years, the pageant  has shifted its image, focusing more on women empowerment and activism.
